Site Logs Show Traffic Surge: Human or Zombie

by derek53 on February 22nd, 2012 at 5:24 pm
Posted In: IT / SCI

On one site we work with, I’ve seen trade go from 10K visits/day to 40K. The additional trade looks tellurian during initial peek – it is prisoner by Google Analytics, It comes from different consumer IPs in a US and Europe (but not Asia), and a rebound rate is high though one out of 10 visits or so loads another page.

On a non-human side, we have all of a trade entrance with no referrer, and it is all focused on a few pages that are frequency viral linkbait and would get one or dual views on a good day. It’s all IE (spread among 6 – 9), and a operation of shade resolutions that demeanour scarcely aged (e.g., 1024×768).

Anecdotally, I’ve listened of a few other sites saying this kind of traffic, though nobody knows what a purpose competence be. It’s not scraping, as it’s a same pages that get hit. It’s not heated adequate to be an conflict to take a site down, nor is a site expected to be a aim of miscreants.

The turn of trade has left adult and down, though it’s still happening.

Are any of your sites saying this, and do we have any theories?

Any thoughts on screening this out of Analytics? It totally blows adult time duration comparisons.

As the franchise turns 26, happy Zelda Day!

by ADMIN on February 21st, 2012 at 11:17 pm
Posted In: CNET

The Legend of Zelda hit store shelves on this day in 1986. Will you be celebrating?

Heroes of Hyrule, please lay down your swords and shields. Today marks Zelda Day, and that means it’s time to embrace the Triforce!

For a quarter of a century, gamers have been playing versions of the hit franchise, which has come out in 18 iterations across 11 gaming systems, ranging from the original NES console to the Nintendo 3DS handheld. Despite selling more than 60 million copies, some might not familiar with the premise, which offers an elegant blend of adventure, action, and puzzles.

So, as today marks 26 years since Zelda hit store shelves, what’s your favorite Zelda title (and/or moment in the game)? I’m currently playing The Minish Cap on an actual Game Boy Advance SP, and so far I find it neat that I can shrink down and explore a new miniature world normally reserved for insects.

We here at Crave would also love to see any Zelda art, costumes, or other related content you’d willing to share with us in the comments section or at crave at cnet dot com. If you don’t have anything to share, then today is a good day to brush up on your Link drawing skills:

Dell’s fourth quarter just misses

by ADMIN on February 21st, 2012 at 11:17 pm

For fiscal 2013, the company says that non-GAAP earnings will top the $2.13 a share mark posted in fiscal 2012.

Dell delivered fourth-quarter results that fell just short of expectations. Dell’s sales and outlook for fiscal 2013 were above expectations.

Dell’s fourth-quarter revenue topped estimates, but earnings were light. The company reported fourth-quarter earnings of $764 million, or 43 cents a share, on revenue of $16.03 billion. Non-GAAP earnings were 51 cents a share.

Wall Street expected Dell to report fourth-quarter earnings of 52 cents a share on revenue of $15.96 billion.

For the year, Dell reported earnings of $3.49 billion, or $1.88 a share, on revenue of $62.07 billion.

As for the outlook, Dell said it will “prioritize operating income and cash flow.” For fiscal 2013, the company said that non-GAAP earnings will top the $2.13 a share mark posted in fiscal 2012. Wall Street was looking for fiscal 2013 earnings of $2.05. Revenue in the first quarter will fall 7 percent from the fourth quarter due to seasonality.

By the numbers:

  • Dell’s large enterprise unit delivered fourth-quarter sales of $4.9 billion, up 5 percent. Operating income for the quarter was $461 million.
  • Public sector revenue in the fourth quarter was $3.9 billion, down 1 percent from a year ago. Operating income was $327 million. Dell said it was seeing weakness in U.S. and Europe government spending.
  • SMB revenue was up 6 percent from a year ago to $4 billion in the fourth quarter. Operating income was $412 million.
  • Dell’s consumer revenue in the fourth quarter fell 2 percent to $3.2 billion. Operating income was $39 million.
  • Asia-Pacific and Japan revenue was up 10 percent from a year ago. Europe Middle East and Africa saw fourth quarter revenue jump 8 percent from a year ago. Americas revenue fell 3 percent.
  • Dell said its services revenue in the fourth quarter was $2.2 billion, up 12 percent from a year ago. Services backlog was up 11 percent to $15.5 billion.
  • Mobility revenue was $4.87 billion in the fourth quarter, up 3 percent from a year ago. Servers and networking revenue was $2.2 billion in the fourth quarter, up 6 percent from a year ago. Storage revenue fell 13 percent due to the end of a partnership with EMC.

This story originally appeared at ZDNet’s Between the Lines under the headline “Dell’s Q4 a mixed bag with pockets of enterprise strength.”

No extradition showdown for MegaUpload this week

by ADMIN on February 21st, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Extradition proceedings are unlikely to start before March 2. Meanwhile the U.S. piles on more charges against MegaUpload’s managers.

Kim DotCom, MegaUpload’s founder will likely have to wait next month for his extradition hearing to begin.

All the build up to an extradition hearing in the MegaUpload case was supposed to culminate with a court fight today in New Zealand.

But all we get is another bail hearing involving Kim DotCom, MegaUpload’s founder, according to U.S officials (Update”
DotCom was released on bail). A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, told CNET that its lawyers have yet to file extradition paperwork with the New Zealand court and have until March 2 to do so. It’s unclear how long after the paperwork is filed that extradition proceedings would take place. DotCom remains in police custody in Auckland.

The U.S. seeks to bring DotCom and three other MegaUpload leaders to the United States to stand trial for alleged criminal copyright violations, racketeering, and money laundering. Last month, New Zealand police raided DotCom’s home and arrested him and three other MegaUpload managers. Authorities also seized millions in cash and property belonging to the four men. U.S. officials say this is the biggest Web piracy case ever brought.

Lawyers for the defendants say they are innocent. They argue that even if MegaUpload managers were guilty of what they’re accused of, the copyright violations are not criminal offenses. The charges also wouldn’t be enough to extradite DotCom from New Zealand, his attorneys have said.

The government accuses MegaUpload, a cyberlocker service, of being a front for a huge piracy operation that cost copyright owners more than $500 million in damages. Late last week, U.S. officials filed more charges. There were more criminal copyright charges filed as well as a new allegation that the men committed wire fraud.

Some of the additional copyright charges stem from allegations that MegaUpload copied YouTube’s video library in 2006. CNET reported last month that buried in the U.S. indictment against MegaUpload were e-mail communications between company managers about copying YouTube’s entire video collection.

Nobody has disputed that many MegaUpload users stored pirated movies and TV shows in their cyberlockers, which were then accessed by other users. MegaUpload’s decision makers have long argued that under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, service providers aren’t responsible for infringing acts committed by users. However, the e-mail conversations appear to show that MegaUpload’s decision makers did upload pirated material. The DMCA doesn’t protect service providers from direct copyright infringement.

In addition to the new charges, the government seemed interested in undermining MegaUpload’s credibility.

When officials announced the additional charges against MegaUpload, U.S. officials also noted that they found evidence that the company’s claims of 180 million registered users were false. They said that a search of the company’s computer system turned up only 66.6 million users. Of that number only 5.86 million, or fewer than 9 percent, uploaded files.

That would indicate that more than 90 percent of the registered users had nothing of their own stored at MegaUpload to download. U.S. officials will likely assert that people visited the service to download unauthorized copies of movies, TV shows, music, video games and other media.

Ira Rothken, DotCom’s U.S. lawyer and a long-time defender of Web sites accused of copyright violations, is unimpressed with the new charges and says they won’t change one important fact.

“There is no secondary infringement or Grokster-type inducement liability under criminal law,” Rothken told CNET. “This is at best a civil case and should be tried in civil court, without policemen and raids and asset seizures…At some point, somewhere, we [DotCom and the other defendants] will walk out of court and go for coffee. Some judge will take a look at this and they’ll be free.”

Sideburn mounts your iPhone via Mac SD card slot

by ADMIN on February 21st, 2012 at 11:17 pm

Keep your
iPhone at eye level with the Sideburn, a small mount that takes advantage of the neglected SD card slot on your
Mac.

Remember that “X-Files” episode when the guy had his own brother growing out of him as a detachable parasitic twin? You can get the same effect with your iPhone and a Mac thanks to the under-used SD card slot and a new Kickstarter project.

The iPhone is a fairly dainty device, but it still needs a helping hand to fit into an SD card slot. That is where the Sideburn comes in.

The Sideburn is a small mount that plugs into the SD slot on an iMac or MacBook to keep your iPhone in a usable place. You won’t have to tear your eyes away from your big screen to check your new messages or catch an incoming call.

You also won’t risk losing your iPhone to the voracious stack of papers that has been collecting on your desk for the last five years.

The mount is made from aluminum to match the look of your other Apple products. It swivels around for an adjustable viewing angle.

The Sideburn is in fundraising mode on Kickstarter with an ambitious $35,000 goal. A $35 pledge will get you a dock of your own, should the project reach its goal. Just be sure to check that your particular Mac has an SD card slot available.
